Students in Year Ten at Chenderit School have been exploring the theme of identity, and have been thinking about how the objects that we own sometimes unwittingly or unintentionally reflect our own sense of character. Shoes in particular reflect who we are. We tend to select shoes that show the world how we want to be presented, but as soon as these objects become “ours” they become companions on our every adventure, their scuffs and wear echoing and recording the places we have been and the things that we have seen. The phrase “walk a mile in my shoes” reflects this, as it reminds us not only of the journeys we all take and challenges that we each face, but of the fact that it sometimes takes considerable effort to truly empathise with someone else. As the viewer considers each of the paintings within this exhibition, they are left to wonder about the artists that have created them, the hidden stories behind each image, and about how these individual characters portray themselves.
